Hi, fellow Substackers,
Thinking of Mother’s Day, while searching for stories I’d written a while back, I came across a poem I wrote a long time ago about the loss of my mother. We all have good memories of those we have lost, so grief these days bears no weight for the memories are there forever and those we’ve lost are in our hearts always. The poem is titled, Without You.
I picture my life without you
My eyes see you as you were
Such a soft, warm smile as you
Laughed at my makeup
I was a clown that day for you
Dressed for Halloween
I wanted to see you smile and not
See your illness as you lay in bed, thin and worn
Now the room is empty, Mother
White walls, clean floors, no sight of you
Except for the smile I gave you that day
Your face crinkled and bright
Life without you again so strong today
So hard, but not fatal, I think
My heart and yours are together forever.
A Happy Mother’s Day to all those here that have children, whether through birthing or adopted. No matter. Life wouldn’t be as special as it is without mothers or children. Have a wonderfully happy day. All best, Giulietta

This verbalizes a lot of the thoughts I had when my grandmother died about two years ago.
